Digital vs. Traditional Advertising: How to Make the Right Choice for Your Arts Organization

A group of coworkers gather around a desk, collaborating on scheduling and budget decisions.

It would be great if we could say “yes” to every advertising opportunity that comes our way. More exposure! More audiences! More ticket sales!

But the reality is that for most arts organizations, budgets are tight, and every dollar has to work hard.

So how do you decide where to put your advertising dollars? The choice between digital and traditional advertising is one of the biggest decisions we help clients make. And while we’re not here to say that one is always better than the other, we do tend to recommend prioritizing digital ads, especially when the budget is limited.

Here’s why.

You Can See What’s Working (And What’s Not)

One of the biggest advantages of digital advertising is its trackability. Whether you’re running paid social media posts, Google search ads, YouTube pre-roll, or ads on music streaming platforms, you can track impressions, clicks, conversions, and more in real-time.

That kind of data isn’t just useful, it’s empowering! It tells you where your audience is engaging and where they’re not.

And that means…

You Can Adjust On the Fly

With digital ads, you’re not locked in. You can shift your budget, pause underperforming ads, try a different image or headline, or A/B test a new call to action. That kind of flexibility simply isn’t possible with a printed flyer or a radio spot that’s already aired.

For organizations with tight marketing timelines and evolving goals, this kind of adaptability makes a huge difference.

It Performs Better - Because It’s Built for Action

The truth is, digital advertising doesn’t just give you better data; it often gives you better results.

Why? Because it’s designed for direct action.

When someone hears a radio ad or sees your poster, they may be interested – but unless they remember your URL or promo code and go back later, that interest may never turn into a ticket sale.

Digital ads eliminate those extra steps. A Meta ad can take a user straight to your ticketing page with a single click. And because you’re showing up in the spaces your audience already scrolls (on Instagram, in their search results, in their inbox) you’re meeting them where they already are, not hoping that they’re paying attention to the radio when your ad airs or that they flip to the right page in a magazine.

And let’s talk numbers. Across the board, click-through rates and engagement are consistently higher in digital campaigns than what traditional media channels boast as their potential performance. Plus, with digital, those numbers reflect real audience interactions, not just estimates.

But What About Traditional Media?

Traditional advertising – like print ads in your local newspaper, radio spots, or billboard placements – can still have value. They’re familiar, they reach a wide local audience, and they can help build name recognition in your community while maintaining relationships with your local media companies. If you decide to spend money on traditional media, we recommend making sure that you get a 1:1 spend.  This means for every $1 you spend, the media company provides you with $1 of a free service – usually referred to as “added value.”

Here’s something we want to clarify: if the ad buy is with a traditional media outlet, even if it includes online components (like banner ads on the local radio station’s website), we still consider that a traditional buy.

Why? Because you’re still typically paying for a package with limited customization, limited targeting, and limited data on what’s working.

And cost-wise: You’re often paying more for less. A $500 ad in a newspaper might get you a small square on page 12. That same $500 in a Meta campaign could give you thousands of targeted impressions, hundreds of clicks, and a clearer picture of what’s converting.

The Bottom Line

We promise we’re not anti-traditional advertising. We’re pro-smart spending!

When your budget is limited, digital advertising offers more control, better performance, and a stronger return on investment. That’s why, nine times out of ten, it’s where we recommend putting your first dollars. But that doesn’t mean it’s all or nothing. Sometimes a well-placed print ad or radio spot can complement your digital strategy.

The key is to make your advertising decisions based on

  • Your goals
  • Your audience
  • Your budget
